POLLUTED WATERS

Your health and safety matter...

We read that all water in the U.K. is contaminated one way or another, and that many of the waters used for boating carry particular risks such as Weil's Disease (Leptospirosis) and Blue-Green Algae. The risks to health and life are small but very real, so note the following carefully.

• Reduce the risks of infection by avoiding immersing the head in the water, touching material in the water likely to be contaminated, or putting your hand in your mouth.
• Small cuts and grazes should be well-protected by waterproof plasters.
• Avoid water where you can see blue-green algae.
• Wash your hands thoroughly before eating. Shower thoroughly after water activities.
• Ensure that clothes are washed and dried after water activities.
• Avoid horseplay in or near the water.
• If any symptoms of illness (especially flu-like symptoms or joint and muscle pains) occur after possible contamination tell your doctor that you have been in the water.
